In the history of Bollywood cinema, many actors came and go but there is one actor who changed the face of the film industry Legendry Dilip Kumar, who brought a different aura to acting and inspired many actors.

Who is Dilip Kumar?

Dilip Kumar (Yousuf Khan) was born on 11 December 1922 in Peshawer which is today part of Pakistan. Belongs to a rich family father Lala Gulam Server was a fruit merchant. His family migrated from Peshawar to Mumbai in 1930, at the age of 17, in the year 1940, fought with his father and went to Pune. He started a canteen business out there, use to sell sandwiches, and earned money. After some time, a famous actress and owner of Bombay Talkies, Devik Rani watched him and due to his good understanding of Urdu and English, has pointed him as a scriptwriter in Bombay Talkies.

Career & Facts

In the year 1944,  at Devika Rani’s behest, Dilip Kumar acted in his career first movie Jawar Bhata along with changed his name to Dilip Kumar. This movie didn’t hit on the box office but in the 1947-released movie, Jugnu took Dilip Kumar to stardom.

After this movie, his dialogue delivery, and intense style, were a hit with people.

The year 1948 film Mela, Andaz with Nargis and Raj Kapoor 1949, Yahudi in 1958, and Bimal Roy Devdas made Dilip Kumar the tragedy king of the film industry and then, Dilip Kumar did some light roles like Kohinoor and Ram and Shyam.

The most celebrated film in the Indian film industry Mughal-E-Azam, Dilip Kumar portrayed the character of Salim really well and his on-screen chemistry with Madhubala won hearts all over the world.

Personal Life

After separating from actress Madhubala Dilip Kumar concentrated more on films and he didn’t marry until the age of 44. This was the time when 22 years old Sayera Bano came into his life. If we look into Dilip Kumar’s acting career then Talat Mahmood’s voice really suited him.

It is also said that Mukesh’s voice was made for Dilip Kumar but later Shanker Jaikishan started using Mukeshs voice for Raj Kapoor and then Rafi became Dilip Kumar’s on-screen voice.

The genre of film was changing. As a romantic hero, Rajesh Khanna was ruling the box office but Dilip Kumar’s influence was still in place. Even angry young man Amitabh Bachchan couldnt budge Dilip Kumar’s status. Film shakti was the live example of it where Amitabh Bachchan played Dilip Kumars, son.

Dilip Kumar also produced films in which Ganga and Jamuna are considered to be the best his own younger brother Nasir Khan also acted in this film. Although Dilip Kumar started acting in the 40s.But even the 80s witnessed Dilip Kumars acting.

In films like shakti, Vidhata, Mashal, and Karma in all these films, we saw a different and mature Dilip Kumar.

Awards

In 1993 Dilip Kumar was presented with the film fare lifetime achievement award. Dilip Kumar also holds the Guinness world record for the Indian actor winning the most awards.

The Indian film industry’s He-Man Dharmendra has also admitted many times that he decided to join the film industry only after watching Dilip Kumar’s films.

And Manoj Kumar also known as Mr. Bharat named himself Manoj because in one of Dilip Kumar’s films Shabnam Dilip Kumar’s name was Manoj.

In the Indian film industry, Manoj Kumar is one of those actors who has inspired many generations

It might a bad decision for him but there was a time when he got the opportunity to act in the Hollywood film Lawrence Of Arabia but he denied it. It was the movie that had gotten mostly Oscar Awards in 1963.

Additional Note

Dilip Kumar was the first actor in Bollywood to get the best actor Filmfare award for the movie Daag released in 1952.

Dilip Kumar has got 7 times Filmfare award, no one has broken this award record yet neither Amitabh Bachchan nor Shahrukh Khan. During the 15nth century, was the only actor that has charged the most fees for acting, around 1 lakh.

Death

He died on 7th July 2021 due to prolonged illness, was an institution himself that upcoming actors learn acting by watching his films.
